Spring Semester 2010 -- 12:430  Liturgical Spirituality in a Consumer Society   Saint Meinrad Weekend Course  January 23-24, February 27-28, March 20-21, 2010 (snow dates: March 27-28, 2010)

This course studies the nature of liturgical spirituality as described by some of the leading liturgical theologians of the contemporary Church; Chauvet, Chupungo, Guardini, Kavanagh, Kilmartin, Power, Schmemann, etc. Second, the course examines the American expression of this spirituality as described in Vincent Miller’s classic work Consuming Religion: Christian Faith and Practice in a Consumer Culture. The course then attempts to build a bridge between part one (liturgical spirituality) and part two (contemporary culture) by exploring ways in which the official prayer of the Church can better serve the spiritual needs of contemporary American Catholics. Syllabus can be viewed at http://www.tomrichstatter.org/d10s2010.htm

Spring Semester 2010 -- 12:639 Ministry to the Sick, Dying and Bereaved

This seminar studies the history of the Church’s care for the sick, the dying, the dead, and the bereaved, as well as the rituals and liturgical rites the Church employs in this ministry, namely:  Pastoral Care of the Sick:  Rites of Anointing and Viaticum, and The Order of Christian Funerals. The aim of the seminar is to understand the meaning of these rites, to develop a theology of illness and death, and (through videos and role playing) to enable the participants to be better prepared to minister to the sick, the dying, and the bereaved, and to assist others preparing for this ministry in Catholic parishes.  For a syllabus click here

Search Engine:  Several readers have asked that I insert a search engine into my website.  Google is a great help in this regard.  Once you are in tomrichstatter.org, enter the word or topic you wish to search into Google and click "search this site" and all the pages of tomrichstatter.org where that word is mentioned will be listed.  Also I have tried to insert the key things you might want to search for into the glossary and hyperlink the items to the place where they are treated in my website.  I hope this is helpful to you.  If there are any items that you cannot find please bring them to my attention at tomrich@psci.net.

New Mass Prayers -- New ICEL Translations:   Several people have asked me for some "background" regarding the new English translation of prayers of the Mass. There is an excellent article by Bishop Donald W. Trautman, chairman of the USCCB's Committee on the Liturgy, in Worship July 2006 [80:4] pp 290-390: "The Relationship of the Active Participation of the Assembly to Liturgical Translations."   I have placed a few notes on my website in d18 Glossary at TRANSLATION, LITURGICAL.

Islam

Current events have placed Muslims and the religion of Islam in the forefront of many news stories. Many, perhaps most, Roman Catholics know little or nothing about this great religion.  At our Provincial General Chapter in Dayton, Ohio, I presented a brief summary of the religion of Islam.  To see the notes I used for this presentation, click here.

The Reconciliation of Penitents

I have posted on this website a revised and updated version of my book The Reconciliation of Penitents:  A Liturgical Commentary on The Rite for  Reconciliation of Several Penitents with Individual Confession and Absolution, first published in 1987 by the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions.  Much of this material is new.  The formerly published material is used here with the permission of the FDLC.
