Use of Order of Christian Funerals mandatory in United States' dioceses. Future effects of priest shortage on pastoral care to dying and bereaved. Increased role of laity in this ministry.
In 1989 a new rite, "Order of Christian Funerals" was formed. Its elements take into consideration the spiritual and psychological needs of family and friends of the deceased. The new rite makes provisions from time of death to burial prayers and rites. New rites for cremation emerged and pastoral care for the bereaved has extended beyond death and burial.
Ever increasing cost of funeral home services/cemetery costs. Bereavement ministry in parishes. Education in the complete order of Christian funerals. Order of Christian Funerals (1989). Faith in God's mercy for the deceased.
Order of Christian Funerals (1989) - emphasis on paschal mystery -life in Christ extends into eternal present; primary symbols of baptism; liturgy communal, not private; music as a liturgical priority; cremation
Revised Order of Christian Funerals; Gathering in church for reception of the deceased is near the baptismal font;, body is sprinkled and white pall is placed on casket symbolizing baptism; more emphasis on pastoral presence to family; lay ministry becomes involved to represent the faith community; family is involved in wake by telling life story of loved one and involved in the funeral to express their grief by choosing readings and participation.
Death becomes "Alleluia" experience. Emphasis on Baptism and Eucharist. Serves as source of consolation for the bereaved. Becomes a Mass of Resurrection. Establishes role of the community as ministers to the bereaved and priests as to minister to the bereaved, not just follow rubrics. Development of rites for cremation.
