Diversity and vitality. Influence of general manuals (Castellani), Sanctorius Rituale, and diocesan rituals leading to Roman Ritual of 1614. Variation in rites for clergy/laity. Shorter rite more frequently used.
In an effort to consolidate chaotic diverse funeral liturgies, Albert Castellani formulated the Sacerdotale Romanum which influenced the formulation of the Roman Ritual in 1614.

The General Pastoral Manuel was for the purpose of pastoral education of the
clergy; There was a spirit of reform and the approach was didactic; Europe was
complex, The Black Death and Dance of death controlled thinking; Funeral prayers
were identified by fear of sudden death which surrounded funeral piety.
Period of plagues, reform, and clergy abuses. Local
churches adapted to their needs and customs.. Formation of the model liturgy.
Development of grave side rite. Development of manual for pastoral education of
clergy. Efforts to standardize rites.1614 Roman Ritual. Castellani: emphasized
logic not concern and simplification of rite. Theology of dread paired with hope
of deliverance. (Role of printing press, Renaissance understanding of
nationalism and humanism. Calcified sacramental teachings.

Protestant threats against liturgy. Still some variety in local
practices; Requiem Mass the norm. Focus on executing rite and not on pastoral
needs; Separate rites for Clergy & Laity (abridged version). Childrens liturgy
appears; Unbaptized unserved, considered damned. Piety (rosary, novenas, etc.)
and superstition prevail over paschal faith.
