[This two volume work is a classic text in the study of liturgy. In-depth and through, all aspects of the pre-1969 liturgy are covered. Extensive foot notes are very helpful study tools. Jungmann, Joseph A. The Mass: an Historical, Theological, And Pastoral Survey. Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 1976. [This book is divided into two sections. The first section gives a compressed historical survey of Jungmann’s previous works. The second section is particularly interesting since Jungmann is dealing with the 1969 Order of Mass. In this section he does an excellent job of bridging his previous work with the present, making it relevant to the post Vatican II liturgy.]

Power, David N. The Eucharistic Mystery: Revitalizing the Tradition. New York: Crossroad Publishing Company, 1994. ISBN 0-8245-1426-2. $19.95. [A bold and penetrating analysis that aims to restore the eucharist to its place at the center of church life. Instead of offering an all too brief survey of two millennia of tradition and practice, Eucharistic Mystery focuses on three major moments within the tradition -- the New Testament period, the period before Nicaea, and the age of Thomas Aquinas -- taking full account of liturgical texts and practices, prevailing theologies, and related spiritualities, and all with an eye to contemporary needs and questions. The result is a coherent retrieval of the eucharistic tradition for our time and a compelling argument for a renewed eucharistic practice.]
